Since January 14, 2020, Microsoft's Windows 7 users are at risk.
Microsoft stops providing free security updates for the system.
What it means in practice
Users who want to protect their computers need to upgrade to Windows 10. Be careful, older PCs might not be compatible with new operating system. This can make you upgrade your computer as well.
It is a standard practice when tech companies phase out older systems. Windows 7 came out in 2009. Windows 8, which came out in 2012, will have free support end in 2023.
Windows 10 starts at $139 for a "Home" version. $200 for "Pro" version (for businesses and individuals who need its advance features). Windows 10 comes with regular free updates for security and extra features.
What's next?
Microsoft also stops supporting Windows Server 2008 or 2008 R2 operating systems.
In October Microsoft will also be ending support for Office 2010. SaaS service Office 365 is taking its place.
